I agree with the definition of "art" in this course including how it is uniquely human, it is an expression of our experience, and it allows us to experience deep emotions. I also agree that art connects us to the past, reflects the present, and anticipates the future. I agree with these definitions because I have observed them in the world around me and they are objective perspectives based on observable facts throughout history.
I would expand the definition of art to include the creation of a product or service by someone who has achieved elite skills related to that product or service over a prolonged period of time. For example, a plumber's work can be art if he/she spends a great deal of time perfecting their craft, using their knowledge and skills to innovate the field of plumbing, and producing world class customer service and products beyond the norm. To become an artist, this plumber spends time reading about the latest plumbing trends in his/her spare time and perfecting their use of each tool to achieve extraordinary success. With this expanded definition, every person has the opportunity to be an artist no matter how they spend their time on Earth. Every person can produce aesthetic art that evokes deep emotions and connects us to the past, present, and future.
