Defining Art

Defining Art

The topic of what defines art, and how one would put it across in words, is a discussion that can be debated for years to come. I for one, while agreeing with certain aspects of the description in the previous section, in regards to the point of human culture and experiences making up a lot of what art is, I also believe it is not that simple. Seeing as everyone comes from different walks of life, whether it be different socio-economic backgrounds, race, gender, etc. every person can somewhat project a bit of themselves into any piece of art, which integrates yet also isolates groups of people, particularly 'artists' themselves.

Many times, we see a 'clear' notion that artists are getting across in their work, (be it via direct commentary from the maker or interviews) but due to the stigma of interpretation in art, we often times completely miss the point that is being given to us and those human experiences we see expressed are lost in our own projection.

All this to say, that my definition of art is that of course, we must always take subjective and personal views into paintings, sculptures, films or music, but we cannot take away from the voices making the art to solely focus on 'human culture,' seeing as occasionally, artists wish for their work to be experienced and interpreted in a specific way.
