I’d say I mostly agree with the definition given in the previous description—it captures the layered nature of art as both a skill-based practice and an expression of human experience. I think it succeeds in balancing the formal, dictionary-style definition with a more humanistic, cultural, and emotional understanding. It recognizes that art is not just about producing “aesthetic objects” but also about asking questions, evoking feelings, and engaging in dialogue with the audience.
However, there are a couple of things I feel are missing:
The social and political function of art – The definition focuses heavily on beauty, meaning, and emotional impact, but art has also historically been a form of dissent, activism, and social critique. It can shape public opinion and challenge power structures.
The role of interpretation and audience – While the original description mentions a dialogue between creator, work, and audience, I think the role of the viewer/participant in constructing meaning could be highlighted more. In postmodern and contemporary perspectives, the meaning of an artwork is co-created, not just given by the artist.
Inclusivity of non-traditional art forms – The definition emphasizes mediums like painting, sculpture, and performance but could foreground newer or less conventional forms (digital media, installation, conceptual art, participatory art) to reflect how the concept of art keeps expanding.
As for perspective, I’d say the original definition—and mine—lean toward a subjective perspective. Art is defined through human experience, culture, and emotion, all of which are influenced by personal and societal context. Even the dictionary definition reflects shared human agreements, not an absolute truth. An “objective” definition of art is hard to pin down because what counts as art is historically and culturally fluid.
If I were to add to the original, I’d emphasize that art is also a living, evolving conversation between makers, audiences, and societies—shaped as much by the questions it raises as by the beauty it creates
