Who surprised me the most:
Cai Guo-Qiang – I was surprised by his use of gunpowder as an artistic material. His large-scale explosion drawings were unexpected and very powerful.
Most focused on the process:
Julie Mehretu – She carefully layers lines, marks, and shapes to build complex compositions. Her process is detailed and methodical.
Most focused on creativity or the idea:
Kara Walker – She explores deep social and historical themes through silhouette cutouts and installations. Her work is driven strongly by conceptual meaning.
Most focused on materials:
Nick Cave – His use of fabric, beads, and found objects in his "Soundsuits" shows a deep connection to the material and how it moves.
