Who surprised you the most?
I was most surprised by Lari Pittman—his energy and bold, decorative style, coupled with his enthusiasm, felt unexpected in such an intimate video—he blends flamboyant aesthetics with personal narrative in an intriguing way.

Most concerned with process of making the work
Amy Sillman was deeply process-focused. In her Brooklyn studio, she improvises using unconventional tools—scraping, washing, layering—constantly revising the painting in real time. Her entire approach revolves around the act of making and unmaking

.

Most concerned with creativity and ideas
Julie Mehretu emphasizes conceptual rigor: overlaying abstracted mapping imagery, global histories, and political narratives. She meticulously merges photography, architectural plans, and gestural painting, layering ideas through form .

Most concerned with materials
Amy Sillman again stands out for her materials-driven investigations—she uses ad‑hoc implements and nontraditional tools to manipulate paint and canvas, drawing attention to materiality itself .
Heidi Lau also deserves mention—she hand-fashions large clay vessels in her studio. The material comes alive through her process, showing deep material engagement.
