Do I agree with the dictionary definition of art? Simply put, no; however I don’t think it needs to be changed. In my opinion, art is something that simply can’t be defined in one neat little sentence. Any attempt will fall short, including or excluding something that leaves it feeling unsatisfactory. For example, if I had to try I would define art as ‘anything a human creates with intention,’ but that still doesn’t feel quite right to me. Is my hastily scribbled message in the sand art? I would say no, even though I created it with intention. So perhaps art is ‘anything permanent a human creates with intention,’ but that also doesn’t feel right. Henna tattoos are a form of art, even though they fade fairly fast. That’s not even mentioning things like performance art, which is not technically “made” in the sense that I intended. In short, I don’t like the dictionary definition of art not because I think it’s bad, but because I don’t think humans are capable of accurately defining it.
