Properties of Addition

Identify the property being illustrated by each statement as either associative or commutative. Watch your spelling.

  1. \(5 + 4 = 4 + 5\)

  2. \(2 + (3 + 7) = (2 + 3) + 7 \)

  3. \(5 + (1 + 2) + 4 = 5 + 1 + (2 + 4)\)

  4. \(8 + (9 + 4) = 8 + (4 + 9) \)

  5. \( 15 + 7 = 7 + 15 \)

  6. \( (2 + 3) + 6 = 2 + (3 + 6) \)

  7. \((8 + 7) + 3 = 8 + (7 + 3) \)

  8. \( 4 + (9 + 1) = 4 + (1 + 9) \)

  9. \( (2 + 4) + 3 + 11 = 2 + 4 + (3 + 11) \)

  10. \( (5 + 2) + 7 = 5 + (2 + 7) \)

  11. \( 6 + 10 = 10 + 6 \)

  12. \( (5 + 8) + 9 = 9 + (5 + 8)\)

  13. \(5 + (10 + 3) = 5 + (3 + 10) \)

  14. \( 8 + 1 = 1 + 8 \)

  15. \( 2 + (3 + 4) = (2 + 3) + 4 \)

  16. \( 3 + 0 + (7 + 5) = 3 + 0 + (5 + 7) \)

  17. \( 6 + (7 + 9) = (6 + 7) + 9 \)

  18. \( 4 + (3 + 2) + 8 = (4 + 3) + 2 + 8\)
