Keep this list of links to great external art resources, collections, and libraries handy. Several activities in this course will ask you to find works of art at these links. This is by no means an exhaustive list of all the great online galleries. If you find another collection you like, let us know about it!
  • Arcspace: Lots of architectural resources from the Danish Architecture Center

  • ART 21: Includes interviews with major contemporary artists, studio visits, and explanations of their work

  • Artchive: Great link with an alphabetical listing of artists, mostly contemporary and historical European

  • Artcyclopedia: Good general art site, mostly image links to museums

  • Artvee: High-resolution, public domain artworks you are free to download

  • Bradshaw Foundation: Excellent source for images and information on prehistoric and ancient art

  • Burke Museum: Artwork database from the collections of the University of Washington

  • Cities and Buildings Collection: More than 5,000 architectural images maintained by the architecture department at the University of Washington

  • Currier Museum of Art: A smaller museum in Manchester, NH, with a fantastic collection, much of it online

  • Google Images: A comprehensive search engine for images

  • Google Arts and Culture: global collections created by the Google Cultural Institute

  • Guggenheim Museum: a searchable database of thousands of artworks from the museum's permanent collection

  • Internet Archive: a not-for-profit library of millions of free books, movies, software, music, art, and more

  • Library of Congress: sets of images that are free to use and reuse

  • Los Angeles County Museum of Art: a searchable image library of the museum's collections and exhibits

  • Metropolitan Museum of Art: Extensive collection database from many cultures and time periods

  • Museum of Fine Arts, Boston: An extensive digital collection with text information

  • Museum of Modern Art New York A treasure trove of modern art

  • National Galleries of Scotland: Extensive collection of artwork from many cultures and time periods

  • Rijksmuseum: a national museum in the Netherlands dedicated to Dutch arts

  • Saatchi Gallery, London: Cutting-edge contemporary art, plus a site where any artist can post their work

  • Seattle Art Museum

  • Smarthistory: A free and open not-for-profit art history textbook

  • Smithsonian Digital Libraries: digital collections of images, books, and exhibits with research tools

  • The Art Story: Pieces on movements, artists, theory, and the progression of art history

  • The National Gallery of Art, Washington, DC: The United States national art museum
