From the list of artists I viewed on Art21—Julie Mehretu, Mark Bradford, Loie Hollowell, and Diana Thater—each had a unique focus.

The artist who surprised me the most was Julie Mehretu, because she merges abstraction with history and politics, creating works that are both layered and intellectually engaging.

When it comes to process, Mark Bradford stood out. His method of layering, scraping, and rebuilding with materials taken from his urban surroundings shows how much he emphasizes the act of making as part of the meaning.

In terms of creativity and concept, Loie Hollowell was the most striking. Her work centers on the human body, identity, and emotional experience, turning personal themes into abstract visual forms.

Finally, the artist most attentive to materials was Diana Thater. By working with light, video, and spatial design, she transforms materials into immersive installations that question how we see nature and perception itself.
