Who surprised me the most?
Theaster Gates surprised me because of how he integrates social activism and community rebuilding with his art.
Most concerned with the process:
Julie Mehretu seemed very focused on the process, carefully layering and building her complex paintings.
Most concerned with creativity in idea:
Maya Lin was clearly driven by creative ideas, especially how her work connects history, environment, and memory.
Most concerned with materials:
Nick Cave showed a deep concern with materials, especially in his use of fabric and found objects for his sculptures and costumes.
Watching these artists gave me a better understanding of how varied art-making can be, from concept to material choice.
