🖼️ Two-Dimensional Work: Piet Mondrian, Composition with Red, Blue, and Yellow (1930)

Formalist Description (Objective):

  1. The work is composed of straight, black vertical and horizontal lines that intersect at right angles.

  2. The shapes are primarily geometric rectangles and squares.

  3. The artist uses a limited color palette of red, blue, yellow, black, white, and gray.

  4. The composition is asymmetrical, but balanced through spacing and color placement.

Subjective Reaction:
The artwork gives me a feeling of calm structure and quiet control.

🗿 Three-Dimensional Work: Constantin Brancusi, Bird in Space (1923)

Formalist Description (Objective):

  1. The sculpture features a tall, elongated, and tapered form that curves slightly upward.

  2. It is made of polished bronze, giving it a smooth, reflective surface.

  3. The base contrasts with the vertical form by being low, flat, and solid.

  4. The shape is aerodynamic and abstract, avoiding sharp angles or detailed texture.

Subjective Reaction:
The sculpture feels graceful and uplifting, almost like it’s rising or moving on its own.
