Video: Constructivist Learning Theory
Watch from 33:17 — How learners construct their own knowledge (approx. 4 minutes)
Constructivist Learning Theory shifts the focus from the instructor to the learner. Rather than passively receiving information, learners actively construct their own understanding by connecting new information to what they already know.
Key principles include:
- Learner-centered instruction: The course is designed around the learner’s needs, not the instructor’s convenience.
- Learning from more capable peers: Even without classmates, learners can seek out subject matter experts or knowledgeable people online.
- Role shift of the instructor: From “sage on the stage” (lecturing expert) to “guide on the side” (facilitator who provides resources and direction).
- Personal learning environment: Learners are encouraged to construct their own learning environments and seek resources that work best for them.
