Description

Practice: Order of operations with negative numbers

Evaluate the following expressions

  1. \(\dfrac{−12}{−4−8}\)

  2. \(−8 \times (-10 +(−7)\)

  3. \(-5 + (\frac{63}{9})\)

  4. \(4 - (3-2)^2\)

  5. \(-8 - 10 \times (-7)\)

  6. \(-4^2 - (-3)^2\)

  7. \((-5 + 7 \times 1) -9 \times 5\)

Answers

  1. \(=\dfrac{−12}{−4−8}\)

    \(=1\)

  2. \(=−8 \times -17\)

    \(=136\)

  3. \(=−5+(7)\)

    \(=−5+7\)

    \(=2\)

  4. \(=4−(1)^2\)

    \(4−1\)

    \(=3\)

  5. \(= -8 + 70\)

    \(= 62\)

  6. Remember that a negative sign is only part of the base of an exponent if it is inside parentheses with the base.

    \(-4^2 - (-3)^2\)

    \(=−(4 \cdot 4) - (-3 \cdot -3)\)

    \(= -16 - 9\)

    \(= - 25\)

  7. \((-5 + 7) -9 \times 5\)

    \(=−5 + 7 - 45\)

    \(2 - 45\)

    \(=-43\)
